Grace Gilbert

Grace Gilbert was born July 4th 1918 in a little town in the Mohawk Valley. Her parents came from Italy and Grace grew up surrounded with lots of cousins, aunts and uncles in a rich family life. Graceýs parents thought everyone should play a musical instrument and Grace played piano but loved to draw and paint. After several years her mother gave her a choice between music and art and of course Grace chose art! She was constantly drawing all her cousins, family members and anything else in her surroundings. Later she attended and graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelors in Fine Art along with her graduate work. Her first job was an art teacher in the Gilboa school district teaching art from kindergarten thru high school and adult education. ýWe lived in a boarding house with other teachers and my salary started at $1,300 then $1,350 and $1,400 the third and last year.ý Later she married, had two sons, and continued teaching art. During her teaching career she was awarded ý year full salary and did a sabbatical in Italy to further her art knowledge and experience. She brought her mom and son and visited many museums and her momýs town in the mountains called Marcone beyond Naples. After 33 years of teaching she retired. Grace has been painting full time and had a very successful one-woman show at the Walter Elwood Museum called ýPast and presentý where all her paintings were sold. She also teaches painting in her spare time.
"My travels took me to Egypt (I rode a camel there) a donkey in Greece, a gondola in Venice, lived with a French family near Paris and was almost run over with a bicycle in China. Many more countries I visited expanded and influenced my art style. My world is a wonderful paint box filled with color, family, friends and always adventures to explore. My paintings are like me, full of adventure and they sometimes tell a story. I paint in several styles like the Old Dutch Masters with a dark background (dark to light) and like the French impressionists filled with light and fresh colors. At 91 years old I am still painting, enjoying my sons, family and friends and this wonderful world filled with color and people. My paintings are my expression of it all!"
