R. Ashley. Krohmal

R. Ashley Krohmal's ceramic work celebrates gesture, mark making, color and form. After attending Alfred University, Ashley completed a ceramic internship in Nagano, Japan. She then went on to obtain a MS in Art Education from the College of Saint Rose. She is proficient in both ceramics and painting. Her work captures aspects of landscape and abstraction. Also accomplished in her work is an atmospheric quality created in her ceramics through gestural carved marks and sensitive glazing. Krohmal says, "My sculptures are the visual manifestations of expressive movement. I respond to the here and now of the clay. Through attention to light and movement my sculptures reflect abstracted relationships between internal and external associations and realities. My stage of preparation involves organizing what Iam bringing to the table before I delve into play. From experience I have learned what types of work I can accomplish with clay at different levels of moisture. Also considered are different qualities of the clay body such as its color, plasticity, and texture. Once these options are considered I move from a stage of play to other stages of more conscious decision-making. I work through the same stages with the glaze. I make my own glazes, working from recipes much like an experimental baker. Modification of my recipes happens very intuitively. When applying glaze, my brightest hue will go where I see the strongest areas of light and so on. While the shapes that brush strokes take on are spontaneous, the direction of their gesture is meant to move with the piece. The use of tape can both help to simplify a large area and provide straight lines that contrast with the central organic feeling. When spraying glaze on to a piece I move in a circular motion, creating different levels of intensity. Process, not representation, is central in my art. My work is created in the moment as a spontaneous dance. The goal of this process is a balance of energy and control, the known and the unknown. My intention is to transport the viewer to a new, perhaps, unknown place. I hope this art invokes a sense of familiarity as well as curiosity."
