Biography
Annie Darling was born in Chicago, Illinois, into an existing legacy of fine artists, including alumni and educators from Harvard, RISD, Cooper Union, and Boston College’s College of Art. Surrounded by photographers, designers, sculptors, print makers, musicians, and actors, art was a constant and defining presence in her life. Moving through the world with art as her interpreter, muse, and emotional outlet came both naturally and inevitably.

Her formal studies included education in art, graphic design and communications in which she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. Post college, Annie founded and led two award-winning advertising firms, as well as an art-based stationery company; all the while maintaining a dedicated studio practice. In 2012 she made the transition to full time artist, focusing exclusively on developing of her visual language.

Artist Statement
"I work with encaustic because it refuses obedience. Wax responds to heat, gravity, and time in ways that are difficult to master, and I am drawn to that resistance. Each painting begins as a physical encounter—a negotiation between my body, the material, and the conditions of the moment. Rather than imposing an image, I stay alert to what the surface is asking for, allowing the work to emerge through action, reaction, and risk.

"Every painting is a singular experience. There is no fixed plan and no desire to repeat what has already been resolved. The work builds through layering, fusing, excavation, and accumulation, with each decision arising in direct response to what is already present. Color fractures, surfaces break open, and traces are carried forward and enriched through the gradual addition of wax.

"Once the initial layers have asserted their structure, the surface is incised, interrupting the field and opening it up. These incised lines are charged with movement and intention, and into them golden pigments are imbedded to catch light or remain partially hidden within the wax. The lines function as both drawing and scar—gestures that cannot be removed, only carried forward.

"The painting proceeds with as oil pigments and mixed media are added to the surface, introducing a slower, more contemplative rhythm. Matte passages press up against the glistening wax, creating friction between absorption and reflection, depth and flatness. These relationships shift as the viewer moves, activating the surface and making perception itself part of the work.

"Although I initiate the process, the paintings ultimately claim their own authority. They reveal themselves through resistance as much as through compliance. My role is to listen closely, to intervene decisively, and to know when to step back. Each work arrives as a singular event—an unrepeatable convergence of material, sensation, and lived experience—formed in the intensity of the moment in which it was made."
